[BoulderCouncilHotline] Transcript of CV Meeting with Craig Towler with the Center for People with Disabilities

Greetings Council and HOTLINE followers,

At the April 19 City Council meeting, while discussing the Outdoor Dining and West End Closure to Vehicle Traffic agenda item, staff indicated that a meeting had been held with the Center for People with Disabilities (CPWD) as part of our public engagement work as we contemplate the future of outdoor dining and the possible continuation of the West End closure to vehicle traffic.  Attached is a transcript from that meeting.  Key themes that the CPWD brought up during the meeting include:

  *   Availability of curb cuts and pedestrian ramps to allow people with disabilities to access public spaces
  *   Proper signage that allows people with disabilities to minimize out of direction travel if/when accessible routes are not available.
  *   Width of space between objects in the public realm to allow people who use wheelchairs to navigate freely
  *   Availability of wheelchair accessible restrooms at places of businesses, which is particularly an issue in older buildings/historic districts.
  *   Cross slope/grade of sidewalks
  *   Low hanging lights, awnings, or umbrellas etc. that might obstruct the path of people who are blind
  *   Changes to the right of way that require individuals to re-learn how to navigate a space
  *   Accessible transit stops particularly during the winter when snow/ice can limit access.
