<p class="MsoNormal">At the April 19 City Council meeting, while discussing the Outdoor Dining and West End Closure to Vehicle Traffic agenda item, staff indicated that a meeting had been held with the Center for People with Disabilities (CPWD) as part of our
public engagement work as we contemplate the future of outdoor dining and the possible continuation of the West End closure to vehicle traffic. Attached is a transcript from that meeting. Key themes that the CPWD brought up during the meeting include:<o:p></o:p></p>
<ul style="margin-top:0in" type="disc">
<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Availability of curb cuts and pedestrian ramps to allow people with disabilities to access public spaces<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Proper signage that allows people with disabilities to minimize out of direction travel if/when accessible routes are not available.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Width of space between objects in the public realm to allow people who use wheelchairs to navigate freely<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Availability of wheelchair accessible restrooms at places of businesses, which is particularly an issue in older buildings/historic districts.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Cross slope/grade of sidewalks<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Low hanging lights, awnings, or umbrellas etc. that might obstruct the path of people who are blind<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Changes to the right of way that require individuals to re-learn how to navigate a space<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Accessible transit stops particularly during the winter when snow/ice can limit access.<o:p></o:p></li></ul>
