Dear City Council and HOTLINE Followers,

Last night council members brought up several excellent questions related to how individuals, and in particular those experiencing homelessness, could find restrooms and sanitize their hands during the day.

First let me clarify that in the implementation of the Phase I changes which occurred yesterday, the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless adopted the same daytime sheltering criteria as 30th Street. This means that on any days that meet the Severe Weather Criteria, both shelters will be operational during the day.

Council also had questions about where to use restrooms during the day when services may not be open. There are eight public facilities open right now and another will be added later in the week, where individuals can use a public bathroom. In April, many other facilities will be added that are warm weather facilities (these are winterized and cannot operate during the cold months). Our Director of Parks and Recreation, Ali Rhodes, shared the following information with me that you may find helpful. The Pearl Street location is currently closed and will open later this week and we do have portable restrooms and a handwashing station available at that site. The public also may not have realized that a new bathroom facility was opened at 9th Street, just recently:

We would also urge the public to respect the public restrooms. While all of the restrooms are stocked with soap and/or hand sanitizer, we are finding that some members of the public are taking some of these supplies with them.

Stay safe,
Jane
