The staff materials count the number of meetings of the City Council as 55 in 2010. I assume those 55 meetings are only the ones where a quorum is required.

It is important for our residents to understand the complete scope of Council responsibilities, however.

The meetings required of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are well over a hundred per year. The Council Agenda Committee alone is an extra 50 meetings for each of those two and ne other Council member. Each one requires careful reading of a packet which is seldom less than 200 pages.

In addition, there are meetings of the organizations and committees below, for which considerable preparation is required. DRCOG, for example, has three scheduled meetings per month: the Board Meeting, the Metro Vision Issues Committee Meeting and the Administrative Committee meeting. This is three meetings per month, for each of which a packet is distributed and must be read in order to prepare for the meeting.
