Eva,

I am very honored that you would invite me to your event. It is a wonderful statement that you all are making with your fellow students. Bravo to you all and understand that you have my full support.

I cannot be at your event because I am in Washington, DC at the National League of Cities conference representing Boulder. I am very sad to miss your event, because it would be meaningful and important to me to speak about this subject there. Thanks to you for helping to organize it. I am copying all of my Council colleagues on this message to see if one of them can attend while I am out of town.

Please tell all of your student and parent colleagues that I am going to mention this to our Senators on Wednesday, March 14 when I meet with them. I will press the senators to please reinstate the assault weapons ban that was in place from 1994 through 2004, which led to reduced mass shooting fatalities.

A similar type of weapons ban will be considered by the Boulder City Council on April 5 at a special meeting, so it would be great if you could mention that at your event. We would love to hear from you and your peers about your thoughts on this issue.

Again, apologies for not being able to attend, but thank you for your memorial of the loss of life in Parkland. My thoughts are with you and your fellow students.

Feel free to read this email at the ceremony if that is helpful.

All the best,

Sam Weaver

Subject: March 14 Walkout at Fairview High School

Dear Mr. Weaver,

My name is Eva Cursley and I am a member of the FHS Student Council. Myself and several other students at Fairview are organizing a 17-minute walkout on Wednesday (March 14) in honor of the victims of the Parkland shooting last month. We are also organizing a rally immediately afterwards where several students and politicians are speaking about gun violence and safety.

I remember that you came in to talk to Student Council last semester, and I was wondering if you would like to be involved in our event. We would love it if you would speak on the issue, or were involved in some other capacity.

We believe that gun safety is a very pressing issue, and we are trying to make this event reflect its gravity. Thus, we would love to have as much support as possible from our community.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Thank you for your time,
Eva Cursley
