Co-ops are not in themselves exempt from property taxes. A non-profit that owns a cooperative can be exempt. It must meet the criteria for tax exemption, that is, it must have a charitable purpose recognized by the state or federal government.

Subject: Co-ops and property taxes

Tom or Jane,
Can someone please review the position on property taxes with co-ops? I’m curious if they all get relief from property taxes, and if so why and what is the criteria? Please respond this evening, if this is appropriate timing.

Thanks!
