Macon – Thank you for your continued energy and vision around expanded broadband capabilities in Boulder. More competitive, high-capacity broadband alternatives
 in Boulder support all three of the city’s sustainability goals.  
 
Council’s recently adopted legislative agenda includes state telecommunications legislative reform as a priority. Accordingly, it has been a key focus area
 for Carl Castillo and I.  As mentioned in the attached briefing memo from earlier this year, the limitations imposed by State Senate Bill 05-152 are a primary concern. We look forward to updating council as our legislative efforts mature over the next several
 months.

Longmont's Broadband offers the following service: Download/Upload speed of up to 1Gbps for $50 per month.


 


Here in Boulder, along Pearl Street, here is what's available:


 


CenturyLink: $108, Download/Upload speed of up to 20/2 Mbps


Comcast: $199.95, Download/Upload speed of up to 105Mbps/10Mbps


 


In other words, in Boulder a business customer would pay 4 times as much as a business customer in Longmont for service that is 100 times slower for upload and 10 times slower for download. Or alternatively,  in Boulder a business customer
 would pay twice as much as a business customer in Longmont for service that is 500 times slower for upload and 50 times slower for download.


 


It would seem to offer us a great project in partnership with the business community: creating broadband service as robust and cheap as what the Longmont utility is now offering and building out so that it can reach most of the city.
