[BoulderCouncilHotline] Tonight's meeting

Hello colleagues and Hotline followers. I'm at a conference with the Mayors' Institute on City Design today -- a collaboration between the US Conference of Mayors and the National Endowment for the Arts. I'm learning a lot that I'm looking forward to bringing back to Boulder, but unfortunately it means that I will be unable to attend tonight's study session. So instead I'm offering a few brief thoughts:

Hill Reinvestment Working Group: I'm very grateful to all the members of the HRWG for the fantastic work they've been doing since the formation of the group. There's important work going on in the short, medium, and long term, all of which should be moved forward as quickly as we have council, partner and staff availability. I'm looking forward in particular to passing the revised noise ordinance in the next few weeks. I want to thank our partners in this effort BARHA, the University of Colorado, UHNA, and student leadership.

Reimagining Policing: I'm impressed with the thoroughness of the draft Master Plan, and appreciate very much the data driven approach to policing and crime trends in Boulder. The focus areas and strategies look like a solid path forward for the department. I'm looking forward to hearing the community's feedback in the last engagement window before we move to adoption of the updated master plan.

Xcel Streetlight Acquisition: I am fully in favor of moving forward with acquiring the city's streetlights from Xcel and converting them to LED's. The excellent analysis showed this is a great financial deal for the city and will result in substantial reductions in energy usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and city expenditures over the long term. As others have noted, we will just need to be careful to do so in ways that minimize the impact to our dark skies here in Boulder that we have worked towards for many years.
