Subject: FW: tree removal?

Dear Jane,
I’ve received inquiries about whether the city can do anything to stop this tree’s removal? I understand that it’s taking ditchwater, but apparently isn’t obstructing flow, has had long life and added great beauty to the neighborhood and city. I am acquainted with this tree and hope that the city, with its two thirds share of the ditch, may be able to intervene.
Thanks so much for taking a look at this.
Cindy Carlisle

Historic Tree to Be Cut Down 😢<https://protect-us.mimecast.com/s/zPpCCrkVW7u8G5AWuzlFpV?domain=nextdoor.com>

The Anderson Ditch Company plans to cut down this gorgeous, healthy tree on Tuesday. It is located at 6th and Pleasant. My attempts to have them consider an alternative have been in vain. I believe cutting it down is an extreme and unnecessary measure. For those of you who have enjoyed the beauty of this tree throughout the years, come say goodbye. The tree is probably older than anyone still alive in Boulder. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm so sorry. I'll miss this tree so much. I remember walking in its shade when I first moved into the neighborhood, and being so happy and grateful for it. It's sickening to watch all the trees that grew for decades being cut down in Boulder.

I have been told that the Anderson Ditch has an on-going project that includes removal of vegetation and sediment from the ditch. I certainly understand the need to keep the water flowing unobstructed in the ditch. This tree, although some roots are growing into the ditch, does not in any way obstruct the water flow. Unfortunately, citizens have no visibility into the decision-making of this entity despite the fact that it is 2/3 owned by the city.

Rosa, you are not the first to suggest this! Ultimately, the Anderson Ditch has the legal right to remove the tree. I just wish they had been more willing to work with me on some alternatives. I believe their action is an unnecessary loss for the neighborhood.

Why do they need to cut this tree down? Has the city been involved?

The Anderson Ditch Company is privately owned, but the city owns 2/3 of the shares of the company. This structure makes it difficult to have visibility into their decisions. But ultimately, that makes the city responsible for its decisions.

Call the city forestry dept. There is an ordinance that prohibits certain trees from being cut down, even if they're on private property, if it is designated to be important to the canopy of the city. I think the city offices are closed Monday for the MLK holiday so if the artists are there early Tuesday you may be too late. Maybe call the newspapers, t.v. stations, etc. to get a stay of execution until the city can intervene

I have talked to someone in the forestry department. He recommended proposing an alternative, which was then rejected by the Ditch Company. I do not want to create problems for individuals who are trying to do their jobs. But the bureaucracy is difficult to penetrate. The public really has no visibility into the actions or decision-making of the ditch company.

What is the rationale for cutting the tree down?

The roots of the tree are growing into the ditch. There is no denying that they do. but I don’t see that they are blocking the flow of water at this point. What I was hoping is that they would leave it there for perhaps another year or two.

Sherry, Yes, the city has been involved. Two of the members of the five-member board are city employees. I have talked with them.

Can't they compromise with a root trim? If it's old enough with good tap roots, some trimming should be fine. If it kills the tree, then fine... talk about removal, but only when necessary.
