Fellow Council Members and HOTLINE followers,

At our last City Council meeting on December 3, we made provisional appointments to our Council committees, filling the majority of our required positions. Two committees, the CU South Process Sub-Committee and the Boulder Housing Partners (BHP) Board Council representative, had more interest in them than spaces available. As is often the case in these situations, the decision was made to let those seeking the seats have a discussion and see if an acceptable compromise among the interested parties could be reached. I have heard back from the individuals involved in these discussions (always between two individual Council Members, and keeping in mind the prohibition on serial meetings), and have the following to report.

  1. Bob Yates decided to step off of the CU South Process Sub-Committee, leaving Rachel Friend and myself as the interested parties.
  2. Junie Joseph proposed the following arrangement for the BHP Board: Mark Wallach (who has previous affordable housing development experience) would be appointed for one year while Junie works with BHP directors and staff to learn how affordable housing management works in Boulder. After one year, Mark will step down from the BHP Board and Junie will be appointed. Mark has agreed with this proposal as a good compromise. This type of arrangement has been successful in the past when Bob Yates (a first year Council Member with no prior affordable housing experience) desired a BHP Board appointment, and agreed to spend a year learning BHP process before he replaced Andrew Shoemaker on the Board.

Both of these proposals will be presented to Council on December 17, and if Council concurs (or if other arrangements are decided) we can formally finalize the committee appointments with a vote under Matters from City Council.

All the best,

Sam Weaver
