You may recall that at this year's retreat we agreed to place consideration of an Indigenous People's Day resolution on our work plan, in keeping with council's goal of a more inclusive and welcoming community.


A committee of community members, many of whom are Boulder locals and Native Americans, was assembled and organized by the Human Relations Commission. This committee has been meeting and working on a draft resolution throughout that last few months.


Late last week, they landed on a version that they wish to have council consider. I am bringing it forward on their behalf. A PDF of the draft is attached.


This is a community driven item and little staff time has gone into its drafting. I have had conversations with the committee's liaison regarding the council process for bringing it forward. Folks are organizing such that comments at a hearing would be coordinated and pooled in order to be respectful of council's time.


Below are links to a film version of the play Rocks, Karma, Arrows. It can serve as a primer to Boulder's Native American history. The play was part of Boulder's Sesquicentennial celebration. If you prefer the big screen, you can watch it for free at the library's Canyon Theater on August 24 as part of the One Action 2016: Arts + Immigration project (full disclosure: I am the project's director.)
