Downtown Boulder Inc sent a letter to Council asking that we consider, as part of our ordinance regarding recreational marijuana establishments, limiting new recreational marijuana dispensaries in the downtown area to basement or 2nd floor locations. There are several reasons for this, including concerns about saturation and the desire to maintain the vibrant and diverse tenant mix in downtown retail locations. Their letter states that there are currently 6 MMJ stores downtown, which is twice the number of outlets selling retail liquor. I have also heard concerns about potential odors and maintaining the family-friendly appeal of downtown.
I'd like staff to draft language that would limit recreational dispensaries as suggested by DBI for Council discussion at second reading. If staff sees any concerns with such a limitation, please let us know.
