As far as I know, the Landmarks Board has not denied an application for construction of a swimming pool in the Mapleton Hill Historic District. The historic preservation ordinance does not require Landmarks Board review of pools unless one or more of the Landmarks design review committee (Ldrc) refers it to the board. 

The pools at 437 Mountain View Road and 541 Highland Avenue were both reviewed and approved by the Ldrc. In the 2011 case of 437 Mountain View Road, the committee considered the, small size, low visibility and “organic nature” of the design would make the pool very discrete. In the review of 541 Highland Avenue (also 2011), the Ldrc considered there would be very limited visibility of the pool from Highland Avenue because of its deep setback from the street and that the pool was to be constructed behind an existing pergola/fence. The Ldrc’s approval was also based upon consideration that the proposed pool was a relocation of a 1940s pool on the property.

In the case of 933 Mapleton Avenue, the application (which included an addition to the main house and construction of a pool house) was referred to the full board by the Ldrc (staff memo and disposition attached). The board voted 4-0 (with conditions), to approve the proposal.
